Antarctica is the southernmost continent of our planet. The geography location, climat, flora and fauna give it a singularity that makes it a turistic attraction.

Antarctica has caught the attention of man from the very begining. History shows us the bravery and daring of hundreds of men that crossed the rough southern seas to get to the continent or to the islands near it.

Argentina claims sovereingnty over the Argentinian Antarctic Area, where territory claims of Chile and Great Britain are superimposed.

Under the terms of the Antarctic Treaty, the territorial reclamations have been congealed, and the objectives proclaimed were to maintain Peace, to develop science and to protect environment. The first permanent settlement in the Antarctica was built on Laurie Islands (Orcadas of the South).

Today, under the terms that the Treaty stipulates, different countries have established bases in the white continent, most of which are on the Antarctica peninsula. Argentina is one of the countries that has a greater amount of bases. These Argentine bases participate in the investigation of different fields, such as geology, climatology, glaciology, oceanography and biology. One of the economic activities regulated by the Antarctic Treaty is tourism, which has grown significant in the last years.

Thousands of people visit the Continent every summer, and most of them pass by the city of Ushuaia when initiating or ending its trip.

For this reason and considering its proximity to the continent whith its infrastructure and services, Ushuaia is constituted like a front door to the Antartica.
