ANTARTIDA

Antartica is the southernmost continent of our planet. The geography, climat and biology give a particular singularity that makes it a turistic point of attraction. Antartica has caught the attention of the man from the very begining. History shows us the bravery and daring of hundred of men that crossed the rough southern seas to get to the continent or to the islands near it.
Argentina has sovereingnty claims over the Argentinian Antartic Area, area where territory claims of Chile and Great Britain are superimposed.
Under the terms of the Antarctic Treaty, the territorial reclamations have been congealed, and they proclaimed as Antartic objectives to Antartica to maintain Peace, to develop science and to protect environment. The first permanent slums in the Antartica was constructed in the Laurie Islands (Orcadas of the South). Today, under the terms that the Treaty stipulates, different countries have bases established in the white continent, most of which they are in the Antartica peninsula. Argentina is one of the countries that has the greater amount of bases. These Argentine bases develop diverse activities related to the investigation in different fields, such as geology, climatology, glaciology, oceanography and biology. One of the economic activities regulated by the Antarctic Treaty is the tourism, activity that has grown in a significant way in the last years. Thousands of people visit the Continent every summer, and most of them pass by the city of Ushuaia when initiating or ending its trip. For such reason and as much considering its proximity to the continent like its infrastructure and services, Ushuaia is constituted like the Front door to the Antartica.

The International Polar Year will basically consist of a great world-wide campaign of investigations and polar observations, organized and coordinated in joint by the Council the International of Ciencies (ICSU) and World-Wide the Meteorological Organization (WMO). Both organizations include most of the nations of the world. Investigators of more than fifty countries will work simultaneously and jointly with the intention of deepening the knowledge on the poles, given the intimate influence that these regions have on the climate, environment and the life in all the planet. Premises of this Program of International  Cooperation.
The complex atmospheric phenomena, biological  physicists and who take place in the continent and the Antarctic ocean, they have an intimate and determining influence on the climate and environment of all the planet. To know in depth the entailment and interaction the poles with the global climatic phenomena, it will allow to alert with more precision on human environmental conducts that can have significant influence, or to prevent with sufficient time natural contingencies as a result of the processes in progress. Historical antecedents: In 2007 they will be fulfilled one hundred twenty-five years of the accomplishment of the first International Polar Year (1882-1883), seventy-five years from the Second International Polar Year and 50° anniversary of the Geophysical Year the International (1957-1958) that gave rise to the creation of the Antarctic Treaty. Reason by which it has been determined to celebrate a new Polar Year and as it happened in previous editions, the  international scientific community works febrile arranged to develop monumental efforts in the North and South ends of the planet to intensify its knowledge. It is very important to emphasize that as much the celebration of the “Polar Years” like the the International Geophysical Year, not only they contributed remarkable advances in different fields from sciences, but that they impelled one narrow international cooperation.
So it is the reason by which this event, that occurs with spaces of time measured in decades, wakes up as much expectation. Objective and Period of Activities will approach complex and inescapable scientific problems, with the idea to start up multidisciplinary programs of sciences, that from a strategic conjunction of efforts, do possible to reach results that otherwise never could be obtained. Also one sets out to wake up the interest and to sensitize the public in general, but very particularly to the sectors with being able of decision, on the phenomena in progress and its effects towards planetary environment. The beginning of this intense maratón of investigations is predicted officially for 1° of March of 2007 and will culminate 1° of March of 2009, although some of the programs could stay during a term of up to 10 years reaching the optimal results. Factors that generate Special Preoccupation: The increase of almost 3° C in the minimum temperature of the Antarctic continent registered fifty years in the last, the loosening of great ice fields, the glacier backward movement and other phenomena that can be observed, they have deepened the preoccupation of international the scientific community and seed serious questions on the consequences to future. For that reason, more than ever, the International  Polar Year 2008 2009 it present a titanic challenge in the scientific field, but much more still in the political and social field, that it justifies to invest singular efforts to try to include/understand these phenomena in progress and to anticipate accurate conducts, in order to preserve the life in the planet as the human being of the present and of the future must right to enjoy
