Antartica is the southernmost continent of our planet. The geography, climat and biology give a particular singularity that makes it a turistic point of attraction.
Antartica has caught the attention of the man from the very begining. History shows us the bravery and daring of hundred of men that crossed the rough southern seas to get to the continent or to the islands near it.
Argentina has sovereingnty claims over the Argentinian Antartic Area, area where territory claims of Chile and Great Britain are superimposed.
Under the terms of the Antarctic Treaty, the territorial reclamations have been congealed, and they proclaimed as Antartic objectives to Antartica to maintain Peace, to develop science and to protect environment. The first permanent slums in the Antartica was constructed in the Laurie Islands (Orcadas of the South).
Today, under the terms that the Treaty stipulates, different countries have bases established in the white continent, most of which they are in the Antartica peninsula. Argentina is one of the countries that has the greater amount of bases. These Argentine bases develop diverse activities related to the investigation in different fields, such as geology, climatology, glaciology, oceanography and biology. One of the economic activities regulated by the Antarctic Treaty is the tourism, activity that has grown in a significant way in the last years.
Thousands of people visit the Continent every summer, and most of them pass by the city of Ushuaia when initiating or ending its trip.
For such reason and as much considering its proximity to the continent like its infrastructure and services, Ushuaia is constituted like the Front door to the Antartica.
